Commercial Transport & Fleet Management

Service organizations need to understand issues in advance, so they know which technicians, tools, and parts need to arrive on-site in order to maximize the probability of fixing the issues on the first visit.

General Overview of Industry w/r/t Service and Challenges:

Public transportation companies provide environmentally sustainable transit options that link people, jobs and community via convenient, comfortable, and reliable services. Fleet managers, regardless of public, private, or commercial face similar challenges in managing their fleets.  The goal is to increase fleet productivity and reliability, ensure fleet safety and compliance, and reduce fuel and maintenance costs. They do this through services that focus on, but are not limited to, vehicle and equipment maintenance, fuel, mileage, and speed management, licensing and compliance, and driver safety. Access to real-time vehicle data greatly supports and enables their efforts. Connected vehicles and mobility services are arguably one of the most significant innovations to hit the transportations industry since the assembly line. There is a flurry of activity from OEMs and other manufacturers to add new technologies that promise big benefits in this space. Specifically, opportunities to save on fuel and mileage, minimize unplanned down time, save on insurance and maintenance, minimize traffic violations, and increase the safe operation of vehicles. Furthermore, connected public transportation systems allow public agencies to better communicate by providing accurate arrival times and other helpful information. Lastly, connected transit systems have shown to be used more thus reducing the number of private vehicles on the road. Fewer private vehicles result in faster and safer public transit.

Customer Story

A state-contracted, public transportation company has partnered with Spoke AIOT to monitor the logistics and performance of the bus fleet and railroad passenger cars.  The bus fleet was neither sensorized or connected to the cloud while the railroad passenger cars data was limited and only available batch extracts from the master control system. The public transportation company needed a fast and cost-effective way to enable GPS tracking and condition monitoring in order to have a real-time view of vehicle positions and performance.  This level of monitoring was critical to meet and validate the SLAs that the bus company had committed to the state.  The public transportation company also needed a panic button to alert local authorities when an urgent response to passenger safety is required.  Spoke AIOT provided the public transportation company with commercial-grade sensors and ruggedized edge hardware to enable high-resilient, cellular, data transmission.  With standard data models and monitoring schemes, Spoke AIOT’s out-of-the-box tools enabled the public transportation company to quickly establish condition and location monitoring capabilities.  Real-time alerts are created if vehicles fall behind schedule as determined by actual GPS position versus planned GPS position.  Similarly, real-time alerts are created if the vehicle operating conditions such as internal cabin temperature or air quality fall outside of defined thresholds.  Spoke AIOT was able to quickly deliver the necessary edge connectivity hardware and tailor the Spoke AIOT application to enable the bus company to achieve its goals.  Spoke AIOT is now partnering with the public transportation company to explore how smart integrations with the rail control system and track sensors can monitor and improve engine performance, track integrity, safety, and other critical aspects of rail operations.

How Spoke AIoT helped this Customer

Remote Monitoring & Alerts

Managing planned maintenance across a large fleet of commercial vehicle where the utilization and operating conditions vary from day to day presents a major challenge to fleet managers.  Spoke AIOT tracks bus utilization over time and automatically schedules preventative maintenance when utilization thresholds are achieved. Similarly, with interior cabin conditions are determined to be a safety concern, work orders are automatically created and assigned to the appropriate technician based on skillset.  Because the vehicle schedule is managed on the same platform as Spoke AIOT, vehicle availability is automatically updated to reflect planned maintenance; enabling fleet managers to better coordinate resources and forecast service costs.

Usage-based Predictive Maintenance

SLA Validation

As state contracts are stringently managed for compliance, the public transportation company needs to provide service logs for all routes delivered under the agreements.  Using GPS data from the fleet, Spoke AIOT was able to generate a route report that indicates each vehicles’ position versus the specified route with timestamps that demonstrate adherence to the contract terms.

Beyond Service

According to the Smart City Use Cases & Technology Adoption Report 2020 report, connected public transport has a 74% implementation rate. Further research finds that 72% of cities have deployed traffic monitoring and other connected traffic-related services, and 68% have adopted connected streetlights. The technology is no longer the barrier to leveraging AIoT.  Instead, the challenge is identifying the various way to create value with AIoT solutions.  The degree in which sensors are integrated with public transportation and fleet vehicles determines the availability of performance and condition data for analytic and AI-driven service responses.  Even with basic vehicle sensors, fleet managers can monitor vehicle operators’ adherence to specified routes and compliance to posted speed limits; reducing driver risks and associated liabilities. Similarly, shipping container can be monitored for environmental conditions while in transit; generating a Condition Confirmation report to be included with the manifest to support the goods receipt and acceptance. And once smart cities and smart vehicles can share data, they can work together to improve traffic patterns, fuel efficiency, and public safety.
